So many designers, so many hashtags, so many appearances by Victor Cruz , so many late night parties, so many photographers, so much street style.
With all that goes on at New York Men’s Fashion week, the answer to the question sometimes gets lost.
That question being “What Should I Wear Next Fall”
While Drake might get the credit for bringing this back, the turtleneck sweater is something that has been trending for quite a while. Not only is it weather appropriate but its also a versatile piece. You can pair it with jeans and a bomber or an substitute for a button-up shirt while wearing a suit.
Borrowing from the style of the 90’s, we continue to see the importance of oversize fit for this fall season. Brands like Rochambeau drew from the movie Juice as their inspiration when making their oversize Carhart-like clothes while other brands like Billy Reid and Robert Geller produced voluminous pants and coats that still have a very tailored look.
Over the last few seasons, we saw a lot of statement coats and jewel tones represented and this year, there was less and less of that. Grey really seemed to own the night, finding its way in almost all of the collection. We also saw lots of tans and black and tons of monochrome looks. Matchy matchy has found its way to be relevant again.
There has been so much streetwear influence in the past few seasons (Kenneth Cole actually did leather shorts y’all) that it’s nice to see suiting again. Shifting from the downtown vibes and the MadMax “We Dont need another hero” aesthetic, three piece suiting, formal wear and suit separates were seen throughout many of the collections. This may be due to the return of Joseph Abboud who sent down the longest but most cohesive collection in the last few years.
Bombers continue to be an important and have gotten an impressive upgrade via print and texture. Wide brim hats continue to be an important. Playing with silhouette and length are continually important as evidenced by under layering and layering suiting with overcoats and scarves. Intarsia sweaters continue to peak out and show promise to be an important trend. Lastly, tailored puffer pants made into a few collections, making a nice marriage between function and fashion.
