Good album. Great album. Classic?… Still need a few more listens, but chances are that Timbo ruined it like he (and Missy) ruined (Busta’s) The Big Bang. The track “Off That” was an obvious plot to stay relevant, and Jigga doesn’t need to do that. He sets the trend, reinvents the game, and answers to no one. To say the album is wack, as has been expressed in various blogs, is ridiculous. Yes, we may want him to talk that street talk and spit it gutter, be he simply can’t. He reflects on what he sees daily. And quite frankly I’d be a bit worried if Hip Hop didn’t learn how to grow up. “I don’t run rap no more, I run the map.” Now, that’s real… I will say that I feel like he’s been taking lines/bars off. Perfect example is “Reminder”. I don’t feel he had to address this concept, but since he did, he should have layered it with more detailed reminders versus just gracing the topic. Over a hard beat, this could have been an opporunity to call out some rappers and tell them exactly why and how he’s influenced them and everyone else. But even his half-effort is better than most.
But when you analyze the album in relationship to his entire career, you have to give it up. Dude made it. He’s not going to continue to lie like life is still hard (as all other rappers do). Dude made it.
Probably the only rapper that can receive a lifetime achievement award. Dude made it.
His claims are unprecedented and have yet to be matched. Dude made it. That’s the theme of the album. Anyone who keeps making the same album over and over is not a true artist. Where’s the growth? Where’s the maturity? Perhaps not appreciating Jay-Z for what he’s become says more about you and your aspirations than it does about The Blueprint 3.
Stand out tracks: Intro, Thank You, Empire State of Mind, Already Home, So Ambitious
